Luminosity masks in Photoshop made easy with this simple, free plug-in from Sven Stork. Here’s my review based on personal experience…

Sven Stork’s Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in is a unique way to create luminosity masks in Photoshop. You use a slider to tune your luminosity masks. You can apply those masks to any adjustment layer.
Why I like Sven Stork’s Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in
I use luminosity masks in Photoshop a lot. Whether in my abstracts, architecture, or landscape photos, luminosity masks allow me to seletively manipulate ranges of highlights, midtones, and shadows.
I like Sven Stork’s Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in because it allows me to generate luminosity masks easily and intuitively with a slider, then quickly create a new adjustment layer with the mask applied. Its dynamic approach—creating luminosity masks as and when needed—is efficient and avoids file size bloat. And it’s free!
This review is based on my own experience and preferences. I have no connection to Sven Stork aside from being a very satisfied user.
(The plug-in also includes saturation masks, which I’ll write about soon.)

How does it work?
Installation
You install the Interactive Luminosity Mask plug-in via the Adobe Creative Cloud app:

Where to find it in Photoshop
After you install the plug-in, you’ll find it in your Photoshop Window > Extensions (legacy) menu:

When you click on Interactive Luminosity Masks, the plug-in’s panel opens, floating:

You can leave it floating or dock it, as you wish.
You’ll see that in the panel, the name of the plug-in is cut off slightly on the left and right. That’s just a cosmetic issue. The plug-in was developed in 2017 and still works just fine. The issue with the plug-in name is apparently due to how subsequent versions of Photoshop CC display plug-ins. You can use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the panel to centre it more attractively. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to resize the panel. Not a problem.
How to use it
The Online Help button in the plug-in’s panel doesn’t work, unfortunately. So I’ll explain. (I don’t hold this against the developer, Sven. It’s a free tool, works great, and is pretty intuitive.)
With an open image:
- Open the Interactive Luminosity Masks panel if it’s not open already.
- Click the Luminosity Masks button.
- Choose Highlights, Midtones, or Shadows (we’ll come back to the Zones button in a minute).
- Use the Highlights Feather slider to specify the range of tones you want to target.
- Choose what how you want to use your luminosity mask: as a mask on a curves, levels, or hue/saturation adjustment layer; as a selection; or as an alpha channel. I personally use the curves option most of the time.
- A new adjustment layer will be added to your image, with the luminosity mask applied. Adjust the adjustment layer to see the changes reflected by the luminosity mask.
- If you want to back out to choose a different tonal range (highlights, midtones, shadows), click the Cancel button.
The Saturation Masks option works the same way. You can find more info on the plug-in on Sven’s website, here.
Then there’s the Zone Mask option when you want to get real fancy with your luminosity masks. It’s a bit advanced, but pretty self-explanatory once you understand the basics of shadows, midtones, and highlights.
Sven based his interactive approach to zone based on Ansel Adams’ and Fred Archer’s zone system. Adams and Archer developed their zone system in 1939-1940, way before computers were a thing. It’s a widely used system to work with optimal film exposure and development. Most other luminosity mask plug-ins use it to some degree. But none of them match the sophistication and fludity of Sven’s interactive approach.
… zone masks are a tribute to Ansel Adams’ zone system. Unlike Adams’ zone system, an interactive zone mask allows for a contigous selection of a luminosity range instead of just 11 zones.

Demonstration
Here’s a video demo. I’ve already docked the plug-in panel to keep it out of the way until I need it. The demo shows how you can darken shadows and brighten highlights very quickly. It also shows how you can apply luminosity masks created with this plug-in to any adjustment layer in Photoshop. Finally, it shows how to use the Zone Mask option to target more nuanced luminosity ranges.
Obviously, it would be difficult or impossible to create these types of complex masks with regular selection tools.
What’s unique about the Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in?
Efficiency
Using a slider to creating luminosity masks interactively, on-the-fly, saves time. You create exactly the luminosity mask you need, when you need it, with minimal work.
In the Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in panel, you adjust the luminosity you want to capture using a slider and you can see the luminosity mask change in large or small increments, in real time. That approach saves time because what you see is what you get, immediately. The luminosity mask is applied to a layer or a selection right away, and away you go.
Other plug-ins adopt a “zones” approach that’s less interactive, more restrictive, and frankly old fashioned. You pick a zone then separately use a slider or levels to fine tune it. As I demonstrated above, the Interactive Luminosity Masks’ unique approach blends traditional zones into a seamless and precise spectrum.
Whichever approach you use in Sven’s plug-in—luminosity masks or his take on zones—you can achieve more naturally feathered masks that would be difficult or impossible using selection tools.
Speaking of efficiency, the Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in saves Photoshop file size. It just creates a layer mask for an adjustment layer or a selection, your choice. Other luminosity mask plug-ins create separate alpha channels in your Photoshop file, that you then must fine tune manually. Those extra alpha channels don’t necessarily get removed after you’re done with them, and that will add to your file size significantly. File size bloat costs storage space and processing time.
User-friendliness
A slider is easy to understand and use. Slide left to reduce, slide right to increase. You choose what you want to mask—highlights, midtones, or shadows—then use the slider to fine tune. Once you have a mask you like, you then click a button to create an adjustment layer or selection.
In contrast, Even those plug-ins that don’t create extra channels include more clicks and mouse movements than Sven’s Interactive Luminosity Masks plug-in. Sven’s plug-in uses a simple panel that you can float or dock anywhere. They tend to overwhelm with a lot of options and cluttered interfaces that take time to understand and navigate.
I prefer Sven’s approach. Easy to understand, easy to use. Simple.
What about other luminosity mask plug-ins for Photoshop?
I’ve tried all the other Photoshop luminosity mask plug-ins available in the Adobe Creative Cloud app. The only other luminosity mask plug-in I use is Lumenzia by Greg Benz.
Lumenzia takes a different, more classically zone-based approach than Sven Stork’s Interactive Luminosity Mask. Greg’s plug-in has a lot more features that come in handy in some situations, like if I want to focus on any pixels that are lighter or darker than X number surrounding pixels, or a specific range of luminosities, or finding edges… and more. Lumenzia isn’t free, but it’s not expensive and earns its keep given the niche use cases that it fills quite nicely. Plus, Greg’s support for his plug-ins is absolutely top notch (I raved about his support in a separate article, here).
Luminosity masks are powerful tools
Luminosity masks enable precise, selective adjustments based on the brightness levels in an image. Here’s some of the ways they make targetted photo editing more powerful:
Precise selecting and masking
This is the most valuable reason to use luminosity masks. They allow you to create extremely specific masks based on tones rather than boundaries in an image. The standard selection and feathering tools in Photoshop are often too crude to create a mask that accurately defines what you want. Luminosity masks focus on tonal ranges, not defined edges, so they select fine details with appropriate feathering built in.
Dodging and burning
Enhance contrast: Use luminosity masks to dodge (lighten) or burn (darken) specific tonal ranges and areas to shape an image. This approach subtly yet powerfully adds dimension to a photo. It also guides the viewer’s eyes where you want them to focus most.
Selective adjustments: Luminosity masks allow you to apply adjustments selectively to only to highlights, midtones, shadows. Fine tuning luminosity masks homes in in on very specific tonal ranges.
Colour grading
Targeted color adjustments: Tweak colors in specific luminosity ranges without affecting the entire image.
Harmonize tones: Adjust color balance in specific ranges of shadows, midtones, or highlights separately for a more nuanced colour grade.
Exposure correction
Precisely adjust areas that are too bright or too dark. Even out exposure across the image, maintaining detail in highlights and shadows.
Sharpening
This is a fairly niche use case, but really helpful if needed.
Selective sharpening: Use luminosity masks to sharpen details in brighter areas to minimise noise in darker areas.
Focus enhancement: Sharpen only midtones or highlights to enhance clarity and focus.
Enhancing textures: Isolate specific tonal ranges to sharpen or soften them without affecting other areas.
